It always makes me laugh when I look through the Sunday newspaper circulars -- and I do that often. It's cheap entertainment! But whenever a holiday is upon us, there are tons of gift ideas, and as much as I love my father, I just can't afford a $10,000 plasma for him -- and he's been really, really good this year.

But for $150, I can make some of his high-def dreams come true. New Medium Enterprises Inc. has really been pushing the VMD -- or Versatile Multilayer Disc player.

This high-def (HD) EVD/VMD player can playback multiplayer optical discs, as well as current DVDs and CDs. The big deal is that it uses an advanced optical disc that enables mobile storage to have a price-to-performance level that anyone can get on board with. It also quadruples DVD storage possibilities.

The unit is scheduled to make its international debut by this Christmas.
